Does cultural viewpoint affect our capacity to appreciate another cultures art?
Unfortunately, our individual lens or cultural viewpoint does affect our capacity to appreciate another cultures art. There's a lot of cultural misunderstanding or misguidance and, as a result, we may not always have the capacity to fully appreciate or comprehend art from other cultures. Perhaps education and a historical understanding of the culture is needed prior to engaging in other aspects of the culture such as art. Because art is presented from an individual/cultural perspective, it's important to learn where and why the art piece came to be before one can truly begin the process of appreciation.

Hi Noelle! I wholeheartedly agree with what you say regarding art being viewed as to its cultural context and the individual artist too. Through artistic expression an artist brings something of themself through this process whether overt or covertly or even unconsciously. I'm always fascinated with the background of an artist's life and times since this is part of what shapes their work. Especially if it's from a culture I'm not very familiar with-that makes it for me a good learning process.
